Five-tier magical hierarchy
The Five Tiers are Aethelgard’s fundamental classification of magical power: five genuine thresholds that rise from mortal craft to authority capable of shaping the world, its underlying magical structure, and finally creation itself.
The magical hierarchy
The Five Tiers mark five genuine thresholds in the nature and reach of magical power. At the lower end, magic remains a craft practised through knowledge, talent, focus, and a connection to the natural world. Higher Tiers move beyond local manipulation into primordial command, direct interaction with the deeper currents of magic, world-shaping authority, and finally the Divine Edict of Creation.
A higher Tier is not merely a stronger version of the same working. As the Tiers rise, magic can act across greater scales and upon increasingly fundamental layers of the world: from local natural forces, to the will of nature itself, to the structure of magic, to the reshaping of regions, and ultimately to creation itself.
Each Tier also has its own internal structure. Nature’s Craft is organised into five major branches; Primordial Magic into seven Primordial Edicts; Arcane & Conduit Magic into four pillars; World-Shaping Magic into three Grand Alterations. The Fifth Tier stands apart: the Divine Edict of Creation is embodied through the supreme aspects of the Genesis Council rather than divided into ordinary branches.
Tier I
Five major branches
Nature’s Craft is the magic of the mortal world: tangible, practical, and comparatively limited. Its users work with natural elements and forces rather than rewriting the deeper laws beneath them. A small flame, a guided breeze, the movement of earth, the purification of water, or the bending of existing light all belong to this sphere. Mastery can demand study or arise through innate talent, but the working remains focused and local, unable to reach true creation or massive destruction. A First-Tier practitioner may even perceive the course of a ley line, yet cannot deeply draw upon that current.
Its five major branches describe different ways of engaging with the natural world. The borders between them do not erase countless local traditions and inborn techniques; they provide the broad foundation from which those practices grow. Typical First-Tier workings include lighting a torch with a summoned flame, finding an underground spring, carrying a short message on the wind, guiding a small craft across water, or masking movement by deepening existing shadow. These are useful and reliable acts, but they remain far from the regional command of Primordial Magic.
The direct summoning and controlled shaping of naturally occurring elements on a small scale: flame, wind, earth, stone, and moisture. It is useful for practical work, defence, and limited offence, but does not amount to true creation or vast destruction.
The sensing and subtle influence of earth, stone, geological stability, and natural energies. A practitioner may identify a weakness in rock, locate underground water, read the course of ley lines without deeply drawing from them, or reinforce a small patch of unstable ground.
A practice of reading and gently influencing the atmosphere—the world’s broader breath. It can reveal weather patterns or distant sound carried by air, and can shape minor fog, breezes, or short wind-borne messages.
The specialised handling of existing water and its forms, including currents, ice, fog, and purification. It can shape, guide, cleanse, or change the state of existing bodies of water on a limited scale.
The gathering, bending, scattering, or enhancement of existing light, together with the shaping of minor shadow. It supports illumination, concealment, distraction, and small perceptual illusions without creating light ex nihilo.
Tier II
Seven Primordial Edicts
Primordial Magic marks the first great leap from manipulation to command. Instead of coaxing a small natural effect into being, a Second-Tier wielder can impose will upon powerful natural forces across a much larger area. Storm-force wind, directed lightning, localised tremors, massive flows, hard shadow, and broad protective fields belong to this level. The result can dominate a battlefield or transform the immediate terrain. It is a natural majesty far beyond First-Tier craft, yet it still falls short of the mountain-raising and regional remaking possible at the Fourth Tier.
The Seven Primordial Edicts are specialised expressions of that authority. This Tier belongs especially to beings such as Elementals, Dragonkin, and Shade Weavers, whose connection to primordial forces may be intrinsic rather than scholarly. Illustrative workings include raising a stone wall in moments, calling concentrated lightning, moving through darkness over a short distance, restoring severe injuries across a group, or shielding a large position against all First-Tier magic and most physical impacts. The key distinction is command over nature itself, not merely greater skill with a First-Tier branch.
Command of large atmospheric systems, including powerful winds, dense fog, and targeted lightning. It is the Second-Tier escalation of atmospheric influence into forceful weather control.
Direct action upon terrain stability and the earth’s crust: localised tremors, large stone barriers, fissures, landslides, and the collapse of substantial underground structures.
Command of great fluid movement and pressure, extending beyond ordinary water to large liquid flows. It can drive whirlpools, freeze broad paths, or focus water with enough pressure to strike stone.
An intrinsic primordial discipline associated with Elementals and Dragonkin, allowing mastery of their own elemental form. It can enable dissolution into elemental substance, extreme hardening, elemental eruptions, or restoration through primordial matter.
Manipulation of raw living vitality across an area rather than the repair of one minor wound. Its reach can encompass rapid healing, aggressive growth, or equally destructive withering and decay.
The Shade Weavers’ primordial mastery of shadow and its connection to the Void. It can harden darkness into structures, create oppressive zones of shadow, and permit short-range movement from one darkness to another.
Large-scale defensive magic capable of creating force fields that deflect all First-Tier magic and most physical impacts. More advanced uses can create mana-dampening fields that actively drain and hinder lower-tier casters within the field’s range.
Tier III
Four pillars · The Elder Weave
Beyond the reach of ordinary mortals lies Arcane & Conduit Magic, known to the ancient elves as The Elder Weave. This Third Tier interacts directly with the fundamental currents of magic itself: ley lines, ancient magical currents, transmutation, space, and spiritual binding. Its practitioners can create stable portals, establish formidable wards, alter material at a fundamental level, or interfere directly with the magical network that underlies lesser workings. Where a Second-Tier power might act on stone or storm, Third-Tier Weave Manipulation can act upon the magical current behind the working.
Within the Third Tier, The Elder Weave is the invisible network of magical energy permeating Aethelgard. The Chroniclers and Abrogators are both associated with Arcane & Conduit Magic, though their purposes differ sharply. Examples include drawing a self-sustaining ward from the Weave, transforming one material into another, opening a mid-range portal for a small group, or binding—and in other hands breaking the binding of—a lower-tier magical being. These workings remain below the regional remaking authority of lesser divinity.
Direct interaction with The Elder Weave and major ley lines. A practitioner may sense, trace, amplify, suppress, or subtly reroute magical currents, using the Weave itself as conduit or target.
Fundamental alteration of matter and physical properties. It can transform one substance into another or change traits such as hardness and brittleness, demanding deep understanding of both material composition and magical binding.
True manipulation of space and distance beyond short shadow movement. It permits stable mid-range portals and temporary pocket dimensions, but remains a complex practice in which instability carries serious risk.
Work upon the essence of living beings, including the binding or release of lower-tier magical entities and temporary interference with the bond between body and soul. The same pillar can be used for containment, liberation, preservation, or coercion.
Tier IV
Three Grand Alterations
Fourth-Tier power belongs to the scale of demigods, ancient beings, and those who have reached lesser divinity. Here magic does not merely seize a battlefield, reroute a ley line, or transmute a wall: it can reshape regions. Mountains may be raised, land may be sunk, ecosystems may be rewritten, and probability or the local tempo of events may be bent across vast areas. Aethelgard’s geography can carry the scars of such workings. This is the point at which magical authority becomes visibly world-shaping rather than merely powerful within the world.
The Three Grand Alterations are not ordinary branches of mortal spellcraft. They describe authorities capable of changing the physical, ecological, and causal conditions of a region. The Aeterna and Khaotari are Fourth-Tier powers whose opposed philosophies shape how those authorities are used. Examples include raising vast geological barriers, purifying or transforming a regional environment, or influencing the fortune and timing of events across an army-scale conflict. Even here, however, the power remains distinct from the absolute creative authority of the Fifth Tier.
Absolute geological command on a large regional or continental scale. It can raise mountain ranges, sink broad tracts of land, carve immense canyons, or level plains through sustained world-shaping will.
Matter manipulation beyond Third-Tier transmutation: the creation, dissolution, or wholesale restructuring of matter and ecosystems through Aether. It can transform biomes and alter the composition of air or water across vast areas.
Large-scale influence over probability, causality, and the local flow of time. It can push chains of events towards unlikely outcomes or accelerate and decelerate processes within a region, without reaching the absolute authority of the Fifth Tier.
Tier V
Five supreme aspects
The Fifth Tier is the summit of Aethelgard’s magical order. The Divine Edict of Creation belongs to the True Gods of the Genesis Council and is not organised into ordinary branches. Its authority reaches creation itself: reality can be broken and remade, continents transformed, true sentience bestowed, the truly dead restored, or an enduring curse laid upon an entire people. At this level, the distinction is no longer between larger and smaller spells, but between working within creation and issuing authority over it.
The Edict is embodied through five supreme divine aspects rather than a mortal taxonomy. Ordinus holds Absolute Order and cosmic law; Saphel holds Ultimate Creation and fundamental matter; Viridar holds Life and Wild Mutation; Noctarion holds Absolute End and finality; Astraia holds Boundaries and Space. Together these aspects define the Fifth Tier’s cosmic reach and distinguish it from the regional world-shaping authority beneath it.
Even the clearest examples are world-defining: establishing immutable laws, creating matter from nothing, bestowing or removing sentience, enforcing true death, restoring truly dead life, or moving great forces across extraordinary distances. These are expressions of supreme divine authority rather than extensions of mortal spellcraft.
